>> by all appearances, it was a status quo election, returning us to the division of power; obama in the white house, democrats in control of the senate, republicans of the house. but appearances can be deceiving, and in this case are. the most important reality of the election is that the republican effort to oppose anything and everything proposed by obama -- almost like a parliamentary party -- was not rewarded. the taking the debt ceiling hostage was not rewarded, calling the obama health care plan which was their own only a few years earlier socialism was not rewarded. that was not they have to begin to rethink themselves and, importantly, democrats will not automatically embrace the same tactics in opposition. so i think that was an important change that creates a new dynamic not that's going to solve our problems. there's going to be no sitting around the campfire in washington making nice to one another. but the possibility now exists for a real effort and a successful effort to deal with our most pressing problems. >> two familiar washington faces, thomas mann and norm ornst

president obama has won all but one of the soda ash called swing states. he won a landslide victory in the electoral college, and he won the popular vote by more than 4.5 million votes. democrats in the senate added to their numbers, and won a popular vote margin of 56-44. and here in the people's house, more than 1.5 million more americans voted for democrats then voted for republicans. the american people have spoken loud and clear, yet the republican leadership continues to exercise extreme partisanship, in defiance of the will of the people. i am hopeful that the spirit of the season will take hold over the next several days, and we can come back here after christmas with less partisan extremism, and work together to achieve honorable compromises that will arrest the widening wealth step and create more fear of violence approaches to address in our nation's most urgent charges. with that, i would like to yield to our distinguished and vice chair, from new york. >> in politics, it is not a zero sum game. the least, that is my belief. it ought not be. we

they spoke on the senate floor after a meeting with the white house with president obama and leaders from the house. >> what the plan is that everyone knows we have been to the white house, we have had a constructive meeting. we certainly hope that something positive will come from that. the republican leader and i and our staffs are working to see what we can come up with. we should not take a long time to do that. i think it would be to everybody's interest if we were not in session tomorrow. my plan to comment at 1:00, we have an hour on our previous agreement that we have. there is an hour of debate on that, we have a vote. we have another vote that has been set up, that is a simple majority. that you are talking about sunday? >> yes. >> we will probably start those votes a little after 2:00. and then for us, we will have another caucus. hopefully by that time, we will have made a determination whether we can do something on the floor in addition to what we have just talked about. i think we need that time to have everybody kind of step back a total bit. is some what complicated.
